Some websites promise to submit your site to thousands of search engines and/or web directories. While we're not generally in the business of recommending exercise regimens for our clients, if anyone ever makes this promise to you--RUN!

The result of having your site submitted to hundreds or thousands of search engines will not be increased amounts of traffic, but rather increased amounts of spam filling your email inbox. While there are a score of effective online directories (we've included a partial list below) for most businesses there are only three search engines that matter--MSN, Yahoo!, and especially Google, which commands 60% market share in the search engine market.

More important than having your site submitted to directories or search engines is whether the SEO firm you hire can get your site ranked in the major search engines, and this can be done without submitting your site to any directories or search engines through link building or submitting site map files.
